OPEN CALL UND ARTWIKI
Im November 2010 lud Kurator Artur Żmijewski als Teil seines
Rechercheprozesses mit einem internationalen Open Call Künstlerinnen und
Künstler dazu ein, Portfolios einzusenden. Um die mehr als 5.000
Einsendungen in die Ausstellung zu integrieren, wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit
dem in Berlin lebenden Medien-Aktivisten Pit Schultz eine offene, nicht
kommerzielle Plattform entwickelt: *ArtWiki*, ein digitales Nachschlagewerk
für die Kunst. Als Antwort auf den großen Zuspruch wurden alle, die
Material eingeschickt hatten, eingeladen KünstlerInnen des digitalen
Ausstellungsbereichs der 7. Berlin Biennale zu werden.

*ArtWiki* ist ein digitales Nachschlagewerk für Kunst nach dem Vorbild von
Wikipedia – ein nachhaltiges Projekt, das die 7. Berlin Biennale überdauern
wird und eine Alternative zu marktorientierten digitalen
Kunstpräsentationen ist. *ArtWiki *möchte KünstlerInnen als politisch und
gesellschaftlich verantwortlich vorstellen und die künstlerischen
Ressourcen unserer Gesellschaft offenlegen, ohne dabei die für kuratorische
Projekte typische Politik von Auswahl und Exklusivität zu verfolgen. *
ArtWiki* wird zur Eröffnung der 7. Berlin Biennale am 26. April 2012 mit
den Profilen derer, die einer Teilnahme zugestimmt haben, online gehen.

OPEN EVERYTHING – CURATED CONTENT FROM ART TO INTERNET
Welche Chancen bietet das Wiki-Modell für KünstlerInnen und den Kunstmarkt?
Kann die Geschichte der zeitgenössischen Kunst vernetzt und in Echtzeit neu
geschrieben werden? Welche Risiken birgt die Technologie? Warum nutzen
KünstlerInnen soziale Netzwerke kaum, während es andere
KulturproduzentInnen längst tun, etwa in der Musikszene?

BREAKING THE NEWS
Über die letzten Jahre wurde die vorherrschende Mediensprache ergänzt und
bereichert: durch Berichte von Bürgerinitiativen in sozialen Medien und
weiteren Plattformen, in denen auch nicht-offizielle Informationen ihren
Platz haben.
Auch KünstlerInnen tragen zu dieser alternativen, politisch und
aktivistisch ausgerichteten Berichterstattung bei, indem sie
Parallelnarrative entwickeln und zusätzliche Geschichten erzählen, oft im
Internet.

*Breaking the News* stellt die Aktivitäten einiger Künstler vor, die mit
ihrer dokumentarischen Praxis, ihrem zivilen Ungehorsam und ihrem offenen
Kunstverständnis ihre individuellen Interessen zurück stellen, um
politische Relevanz zu erzielen. Das Projekt präsentiert unter anderem die
Aktivitäten von Mosireen aus Ägypten, David Reeb aus Israel, David Rych aus
Österreich/Tschechien und Tomáš Rafa aus der Slowakei. Rafa kuratiert auch
das Projekt *Art Covers Politics*, das eingesandte Fotos auf der Website
der 7. Berlin Biennale wiedergibt.

*Breaking The News* präsentiert Kurzfilme und Berichte auf der Website der
Biennale, auf YouTube und auf Facebook. Der Inhalt verändert sich
fortwährend, in Reaktion auf politische Ereignisse weltweit.

*Forget Fear*, die erste Publikation der 7. Berlin Biennale, herausgegeben
von Artur Żmijewski und Joanna Warsza, ist für 25 Euro am Counter der KW
Institute for Contemporary Art oder unter order at kw-berlin.de erhältlich
(Buchhandelspreis: 28 Euro).

Die 7. Berlin Biennale findet vom 27. April bis 1. Juli 2012 statt und wird
kuratiert von Artur Żmijewski zusammen mit den Assoziierten KuratorInnen
Voina und Joanna Warsza.

Die Berlin Biennale wird organisiert durch die KW Institute for
Contemporary Art und gefördert durch die Kulturstiftung des Bundes.

OPEN CALL AND ARTWIKI
In November 2010 curator Artur Żmijewski announced an Open Call to artists
from all over the world, asking them to send in artistic material as part
of the research of the 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. Following
the aim to include all of the more than 5,000 submissions in the exhibition
we developed in collaboration with Berlin-based media activist Pit Schultz
an open, non-commercial platform: *ArtWiki, *an open data initiative for
the arts. In response to the overwhelming reaction to the Open Call, all
those who sent materials have been invited to become artists of the digital
venue of the 7th Berlin Biennale.

*ArtWik*i is a digital art library based on the model of Wikipedia, a
sustainable project that will continue into the future to support an
alternative to market-oriented digital art representations. It aims to
present artists as political and social entities, to lay open the artistic
resources of our society and abandon the typical curatorial stance of a
politics of selection and exclusivity*. ArtWiki* will go public on April
26, 2012 – the opening day of the 7th Berlin Biennale – with the profiles
of those who accepted to be part of it.

What opportunities does the “Wiki way“ provide for artists and the art
market? Can the history of contemporary art be collectively rewritten in
real-time? What risks are contained in the technology? Why do visual
artists use social networks less than other cultural producers, for example
the music scene?

BREAKING THE NEWS
Over the past couple of years, what was one dominant media language is
being enriched by reports from civic initiatives, social media, and other
platforms where non-official pieces of information also have their place.
Artists are contributing to different media coverage with political and
activist expression, constructing parallel narratives and reporting
additional stories, which can be commonly found on the Internet.

*Breaking the News* presents the activities of a number of artists whose
documentary practice, readiness to act, civic disobedience and a refusal to
recognize where art ends make them go beyond their individual
self-interests and work toward political relevance. The project presents
the activities of a number of artists or art collectives such as Mosireen
from Egypt, David Reeb from Israel, David Rych from Austria and Czech
Republic or Tomáš Rafa from Slovakia. Rafa is also curating the 7th Berlin
Biennale front-page project *Art Covers Politics* open to all for photo
contributions.

The project is presented on the 7th Berlin Biennale website, YouTube, and
Facebook with short films and reports; the content changes regularly as an
immediate reaction to political events worldwide.
