*A photographic exhibition about LGBT families in Ukraine has been attacked
in the Visual Culture Research Center*
On the 19th of May, 2012 at the Visual Culture Research Center in Kyiv, two
unknown assailants defaced a photographic exhibition by award-winning
photographer Yevgenia Belorusets. The attackers damaged 26 out of some 40
documentary photographs depicting the everyday lives of LGBT families in
Ukraine.
The attack took place a day before the official closure of the exhibition,
which had passed without incident since opening on the 3rd of May 2012. Two
men entered the gallery, waited until other visitors left, and then ran
along using forks to scratch the surface of the photographs, knocking some
of them to the floor. A security guard working in the gallery was not able
to detain the assailants. Police have opened an investigation into the
attack. A video surveillance system recording of the attackers has been
taken as evidence.
The Visual Culture Research Center in Kyiv has been the subject of past
attacks on anti-homophobic events. On the 20th of November 2010, masked
assailants attacked men and women taking part in a day of remembrance for
victims of violence against transgender people.
The exhibition “A Room of My Own”, photographed by Royal Society of
Photographers and Guardian prize-winner Yevgenia Belorusets and curated by
Nataliya Tchermalykh, was part of the program of the First Kiev
International Contemporary Art Biennale ARSENALE 2012. It took place at
the Visual Culture Research Center with support from Insight NGO, the
Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Ukrainian Women’s Fund.
