New M.A. in Art, Education and Community Practice

The Department of Art and Art Professions at Steinhardt School of Culture,
Education, and Human Development, New York University announces a new
34-credit M.A. programme in Art, Education, and Community Practice that
catalyzes social change through the arts. Combining the fields of art,
education, and social activism, this innovative programme positions the
work of an artist as having social and pedagogical impact, and the work of
an educator as a creative practice. It focuses on framing and supporting
the artist as an activist, an educator, and a change agent. The programme
is designed for studio practitioners, educators, community organizers, and
social activists who want to be deeply engaged in both critical theory and
pedagogy, to inform how they address the audiences and communities with
whom they collaborate. Involving faculty from across NYU schools and
programmes, the M.A. in Art, Education, and Community Practice offers the
unique opportunity to work with practicing artists and educators in
community-based and neighbourhood settings. Situated in the East Village
in New York City, students are able to design and implement
community-based projects in collaboration with vital cultural and
educational organizations deeply committed to the neighbourhood's
groundbreaking artistic traditions.

The flexible programme of study can be tailored to student interests and
completed in as a few as 12 months as a full-time student or in two years
as a part-time student. The programme begins in the fall semester. The
programme joins two existing M.A. programmes in Art Education.

Scholarships are available. Application deadline is 1 February 2014.
