Nature, adversité, etc. – appel à propositions pour une résidence  
transdiciplinaire à Utopiana (Genève, Suisse).

Les propositions peuvent comprendre des projets artistiques de  
différents médias, des ateliers, ou d’autres formes d’interventions.
Utopiana développe ses activités autour de trois axes : les résidences  
artistes, « Plantopic » – un projet de recherche et de jardinage, et  
un événement public en 2015 intitulé « La Bête et l’adversité ».

  En 2013, un potager urbain, crée par des artistes et des habitants  
du quartier s’est intégré dans l’univers d’Utopiana. A présent nous  
lançons un appel à propositions pour venir en résidence dans ce  
contexte. Le jardin est un microcosme qui nous permet de questionner  
le vieux couple de la nature et de la culture.

Contrairement au préjugé de « l'artiste comme génie », qui a inspiré  
le romantisme avec la conviction que « la contemplation de la nature  
peut nous amener à comprendre le sens profond des choses », Utopiana  
invite des personnes intéressés en résidence pour accompagner « la vie  
secrète des plantes ». En plus de l’espace de travail offert  
traditionnellement par la résidence, une parcelle de 5m2 dans le  
potager sera aussi disponible en tant qu’espace d’expérimentation dans  
le  jardin commun « Pote à Jean ». Cet appel s’adresse à ceux et  
celles, qui pensent pouvoir contribuer à ce sujet et qui sont prêts à  
entrer en dialogue avec le jardin et ses occupants.

Cette résidence sera accompagnée par le groupe de recherche «  
Plantopic », qui s’appuie sur la permaculture en tant qu’attitude et  
forme alternative de construction sociale. Dans cette même direction,  
il s’agit de penser la médiation comme milieu, comme entre-deux,  
intermédiaire, mais aussi environnement, contexte, et « produire des  
savoirs qui concourent à fabriquer autrement nos histoires... ».

La résidence est située dans la perspective d’un événement qui aura  
lieu en 2015, « La Bête et l’adversité ». La notion d’adversité  
désigne l’ambiguïté fondamentale de notre existence qui fait que nous  
voulons posséder et maîtriser la nature, mais qu’elle nous possède et  
nous maîtrise au moins autant. Ainsi, au cœur de notre être et dans  
notre environnement, habite une force qui nous constitue autant  
qu’elle nous échappe. La question qui nous guide dans ce projet est  
dès lors la suivante : si la nature n’est ni un réservoir de  
ressources à exploiter, ni un espace inerte à posséder, et pas plus un  
ensemble de mécanismes à maîtriser, comment composer avec elle ? Nous  
visons à remettre en question notre relation à la nature construite  
économiquement, culturellement et politiquement, et à explorer des  
pratiques et pensées alternative à ces sujets.

Les candidats intéressés doivent nous faire parvenir, par courrier  
électronique, un dossier comprenant un port-folio, un CV, leurs  
disponibilités pour une résidence entre mars 2014 et mars 2015 (max. 3  
mois), ainsi qu’une note d’intention de 500 mots maximum. Pour plus

Nature, adversity, etc. – A call for proposals for a transdisciplinary  
residency at Utopiana (Geneva, Switzerland).

The propositions may be comprised of artistic projects in different  
media, workshops, or other forms of interventions.
Utopiana is developing its activities around three axes: artist  
residencies, “Plantopic” – a research and gardening project – and a  
public event entitled “The Beast and Adversity,” the latter to be held  
in 2015.
In 2013 an urban garden, created by artists and neighbors of the  
residency, integrated itself into Utopiana's universe. At present we  
are launching an open call for propositions for residencies in this  
context. The garden is a microcosm that allows us to question the old  
couple of nature and culture.
Contrary to the preconception of “the artist-genius,” which inspired  
romanticism with the conviction that “the contemplation of nature can  
bring us to understand the deep meaning of things,” Utopiana invites  
interested persons to take part in the residency to follow “the secret  
life of plants.” In addition to the workspace traditionally offered by  
the residency, a garden parcel of 5m2 will also be available as a  
space of experimentation in the community garden “Pote à Jean.” This  
call for those who believe themselves able to contribute to the  
subject at hand and who are ready to enter into a dialogue with the  
garden and its occupants.
This residency will be accompanied by the research group Plantopic,  
which bases itself around permaculture seen as an attitude and  
alternative form of social construction. In this same direction,  
Plantopic's research is concerned with seeing art mediation as the  
creation of a milieu, an intermediary, but also an environment, a  
context, and “producing knowledge that contributes to writing our  
history differently....”
The residency is organized in view of an event that will take place in  
2015, “The Beast and Adversity.” The notion of adversity refers to the  
fundamental ambiguity of our existence, which results in our desire to  
possess and master nature, when in fact nature possesses and masters  
us at least as much. In this way, in the heart of our being and in our  
environment there lives a force that makes us as much as it escapes  
us. The question that guides us in this project is thus: If nature is  
neither a reservoir of resources to exploit, nor an inert space to  
possess, nor an ensemble of mechanisms to master, how then might we  
come to terms with it? In this research we aim to question our  
relationship with nature constructed economically, culturally, and  
politically, and to explore alternative practice and thought in these  
subjects.
Interested candidates are asked to send by e-mail an application file  
consisting of a portfolio, CV, availability for a residency between  
March 2014 and March 2015 (maximum three months), as well as a
