The journal for philosophy and cultural studies “Topos” announces a call 
for papers for a 2017 issue.

Topic of the Issue: P.S. Soundscapes

The theme of the volume is to explore philosophical, social and cultural 
questions related to sound, listening and music, with special reference 
to the soundscapes of Eastern Europe and the former U.S.S.R.

The volume understands P.S. Soundscapes in two important ways.

Firstly, in the shadow of the visual turn, sound has often remained the 
poor cousin of visual and cultural studies. Yet, since the mid-20th 
century, sound has been a key element both of the rise and 
transformations of popular culture, and of experiments at the limits of 
art, thinking, music and the relations between people and their 
environment.

John Cage’s famous silent piano piece “4:33” constitutes a provocation 
to thinking about how what we hear connects the individual to that which 
is around them, and about a permeable border between music, listening 
and the environment in which sounds occur.

The first sense of “P.S”. in the title “P.S. Soundscapes” is therefore 
to assert that reflecting on sound can be an important postscript to the 
primacy of vision. We call for articles demonstrating how research on 
sound and listening can enrich and transform our understanding of a 
range of aspects of individual and collective life.

The second understanding of P.S. refers to the concept that we developed 
in a publication on urban studies, P.S. Landscapes: Optics of Urban 
Studies (Vilnius: EHU Publishing, 2008). In that volume, the term “P.S.” 
was used as a way of gesturing to the “post-socialist” region, while 
also suggesting that this term has serious flaws and limitations.

In other words, what we seek to explore in the sense of P.S. Soundscapes 
is how thinking about sound is inflected as it emerges in the former 
socialist countries of Eastern Europe and the ex-Soviet Union.

The volume aims to do this in two . Firstly, by presenting issues with 
relation to sound that are being worked on by researchers in the region. 
And, secondly, by presenting an overview of the particular questions or 
characteristics of soundscapes as they emerge in relation to this 
region, and the towns, villages, landscapes, architecture, music 
industries, mediascapes, technological and performance paradigms, 
communities and scenes to be found here.

The purpose of the volume is twofold.

Firstly, to assert the place of sound as an important node in the 
contemporary humanities, and to present key issues thus emerging. 
Secondly, to explore issues of sound as they emerge in the P.S. region.

Themes of the volume:

sound studies;

sociology of music;

sound/listening and philosophy;

sound and vision; sound and media studies;

the relations between sound, listening and music;

sounds and spaces (music and place identity; local or regional 
soundscapes; music and community; festivals);

cities and sounds;

event studies;

localised music industries (music and work);

sounds and technology;

sounds and psychology/cognition;

sound design/architecture (atmospheres);

popular music;

ethnomusicology and post-colonialism.

Философско-культурологический журнал «Топос» объявляет о сборе 
материалов для следующего номера, который выйдет в 2017.

Тема номера: P.S. Soundscapes

Тема номера – исследования философских, социальных и культурных проблем 
звука, слушания и музыки. Особое внимание будет уделено «звуковым 
ландшафтам» Восточной Европы и бывшего СССР.

Название номера, P.S. Soundscapes, предполагает две важных 
интерпретации.

Во-первых, звук в эпоху «визуального поворота» часто выступал «бедным 
родственником» визуальных и культурных исследований. Однако с середины 
ХХ века он становится ключевым элементом подъема и трансформаций 
популярной культуры, экспериментов на границах искусства, мышления, 
музыки и отношений между людьми и их средой.

Знаменитая «немая» фортепианная пьеса Джона Кейджа “4:33” – это 
провокация, заставляющая задуматься о том, как слышимое соединяет 
индивидов с их окружением, а также о проницаемой границе между музыкой, 
слушанием и средой, в которой возникают звуки.

Соответственно, первое значение «P.S.» в названии планируемого выпуска 
призвано утвердить важность рефлексии по поводу звука как постскриптума 
к «примату» видения. Мы ожидаем статьи, показывающие, каким образом 
исследование феноменов звука и слушания обогащает и трансформирует наше 
понимание самых разных аспектов индивидуальной и коллективной жизни.

Вторая интерпретация «P.S.» относится к идее, разработанной нами в 
публикации, посвященной городским исследованиям, P.S. Landscapes: Оптика 
городских исследований (Вильнюс: Издательство ЕГУ 2008). Тогда термин 
«P.S.» отсылал к «постсоциалистическому» региону, одновременно допуская, 
что термин имеет серьезные изъяны и ограничения.

Иными словами, второе значение «P.S. Soundscapes» предполагает, что мы 
призываем исследовать возникновение и трансформации мышления о звуке в 
постсоциалистических странах Восточной Европы и бывшего СССР.

Эта задача предполагает два аспекта. Во-первых, мы планируем представить 
проблемы, касающиеся звука, над которыми работают исследователи из этого 
региона. Во-вторых, представить обзор конкретных вопросов или 
характеристик саундскейпов, которые возникают в связи с этим регионом, 
городами, деревнями, ландшафтами, архитектурой, музыкальными 
индустриями, медиаландшафтами, технологическими и перформативными 
парадигмами, сообществами и сценами, существующими здесь.

Задачи номера

Утвердить место звука как важного тематического узла в современных 
гуманитарных исследованиях, а также презентовать ключевые проблемы, 
которые возникают в этом проблемном поле.

Исследовать проблемы звука, возникающие в постсоциалистическом регионе.

Планируются публикации в следующих областях:

sound studies (звуковые исследования);

социология музыки;

звук/слушание и философия;

звук и видение;

звук и исследования медиа;

отношения звука, слушания и музыки;

звук и пространство (музыка и идентичность места; локальные или 
региональных саундскейпы; музыка и сообщество; фестивали);

event studies (исследования событий);

локализованные музыкальные индустрии (музыка и труд);

звук и технологии:

звук и психология/когнитивная наука;

звуковой дизайн и архитектура (атмосферы);

исследования популярной музыки;

этномузыкология и постколониализм.
