Dont imagine theres room for everyone in the museum. Perhaps for a few
who are really interested in it. But there is room for everyone in other
places. You can use art in all sorts of ways. Society needs you

OPEN CALL for Research Proposals 2016
Deadline: January 15, 2016
http://www.hetinstituut.org/projecten/het-instituut-school-2/
HET INSTITUUT-SCHOOL is a special postgraduate programme for talented
artists, designers, architects and scientists. In a practice-oriented
course, Het Instituut-School challenges participants to pursue research,
fundamental competences of which are a critical approach, social
involvement and interdisciplinary collaboration. Based in the heart of
Amsterdam, the programme takes current urban issues, both social and
spatial, as its point of departure. Unique in the Netherlands, the
curriculum bridges the worlds of academia and practice. After a successful
pilot project in 2014/2015, Het Instituut-School starts in the spring of
2016.
THE FOUNDATION
This new programme evolved out of the working methods developed by Het
Instituut.
Established in 1995, Het Instituut is one of the pioneers in the
Netherlands that enables artists, designers and scholars to work together
in an interdisciplinary manner on social-cultural and spatial issues. Het
Instituut operates on the belief that the scope of art and design extends
far beyond the aesthetic object, that art is capable of holding up a
mirror to society and genuinely becoming part of it.
WHY SCHOOL?
The transfer of unorthodox ways of working from art and design into other
domains and contexts leads to unexpected insights and new solutions. That
became apparent soon after the establishment of Het Instituut. In recent
years, our way of working has attracted increasing interest from art and
from society.
Nonetheless, much current art education is still rooted in the traditional
studio model, as we see in our research projects and commissions. And that
does not advance the direct involvement of art in society. Moreover,
working with the creative sector is new for clients. That is why changes
to existing working methods are needed, in order to improve and strengthen
collaboration between art and other domains. That interdisciplinary
approach is the most important goal of Het Instituut-School.
BREAKING DOWN DISCIPLINARY BARRIERS
Over many years, Het Instituut has devoted much time and attention to
reflecting on the development of interdisciplinary working models. We know
from experience that the deployment of art in other domains demands
specific expertise and skills. Working in society and having significance
for society demands qualities from artists and designers that extend
beyond the confines of their disciplines. With Het Instituut-School, we
want to pass on our expertise and experience to artists, designers,
architects and scientists who aspire to expand the influence of their work
on society.
Reality based
Programme participants conduct practice-oriented research, fundamental
competences of which are a critical approach, social involvement and
interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants learn to deploy their
academic qualities in real situations in the spatial and social domains.
During the learning process, clients represent the requesting party.
Learning to deal with the tension between autonomy and feasibility forms
the core of the education programme.
Various approaches
Participants work in an interdisciplinary context. Problems are approached
from various angles, the goal of which is to achieve a result that unites
the qualities of separate disciplines. The interdisciplinary structure of
Het Instituut-School brings together participants from various
backgrounds. They draw on interdisciplinary working models to elaborate
research subjects within one programme, under the supervision of an
international network of top experts from various fields.
Education in response to demand
Het Instituut-School embraces the idea of teaching on demand: involving
the right experts for subjects chosen by participants. These experts make
up the Advisory Circle, and include individuals with a theoretical and
philosophical perspective as well as individuals from the world of
practice. Working with the Advisory Circle is an efficient and effective
form of education that also generates an international network of
knowledge-sharing.
Knowledge sharing
Through public lectures, internal meetings and an online publication of
interdisciplinary working models, we share our knowledge with professional
colleagues and mentor participants in presenting their research.
GOALS
Participants develop skills in reframing commissions and assignments. At
the end of the course they are capable of exploring a personal and
socially relevant subject and convincingly substantiating it in words and
image.
Participants develop skills in interdisciplinary and intercultural
collaboration. At the end of the course they can work in teams on an issue
and formulate a plan in consultation with clients and stakeholders.
Participants develop as socially connected artists and designers. They
are capable of designing and implementing interventions that strengthen
the community socially or spatially. They do this on the basis of critical
thought and empathy with people, and on the strength of personal ambitions
and an autonomous work ethic.
HOW DOES THE SCHOOL WORK?
Het Instituut-School offers a six-month programme, commencing in March
2016. The periods of work are determined in consultation with
participants.
Candidates
Artists, designers, architects and scientists who have successfully
graduated from an art academy or university and possess a Masters degree
can apply for the programme. Candidates with a Bachelors degree and at
least two years of practical experience in the field of art are also
eligible. Joint applications from more than one individual are also
considered.
See the Application Form for the full selection criteria.
Studio space
Participants can make use of a shared studio space at Prinsengracht 719bg
in Amsterdam.
Research budget
To bring the programme as close as possible to the field of practice, a
budget is made available for each research project. Costs that must be
covered by this budget are:
supervision by mentor and Advisory Circle
honorarium for participant
development costs
material costs
travel, accommodation and other costs
Participants draw up a budget in advance and, after receiving approval
from Het Instituut, keep track of their expenditure. Het Instituut
supervises the participants in drawing up and managing their budgets.
TIMELINE
The programme starts in March 2016 and lasts six months. The course is
divided into two periods. The first focuses on developing and deepening
the research proposal, and the second on further elaborating and
translating the research into scenarios and/or designs.
Kick-off
The programme starts with a kick-off presentation in which participants
announce their research proposal and explain their vision and way of
working as an artist/designer/architect.
Monthly internal sessions
During the programme, an internal presentation is held every four weeks in
the studio of Het Instituut. Participants explain their progress to a
panel of experts from the Advisory Circle.
Public presentations
A public meeting is held at the end of every period. The emphasis lies on
the progress of participants and on feedback from the audience. These
presentations are open to the public. Het Instituut also invites relevant
guests to these events, for example, potential clients, local residents or
experts with thematic affinity for the research subjects.
TEAM
At the core is the research track of the participants, the development of
which is monitored by a mentor. In addition, participants can obtain
advice from experts in the Advisory Circle. All activity is coordinated by
a project coordinator.
Mentors
The research projects are supervised by a team of mentors, from different
disciplines; art, design and science. The mentors for 2016 are Claudia
Linders, architect; Dirk van Weelden, writer and social philosopher; and
Johan Wagenaar, visual artist.
Project coordinator
The project coordinator liaises between participants and experts from the
Advisory Circle, supports programme participants, organizes public and
internal presentations, and generates publicity for the programme. The
project coordination is in the hands of Laura Mudde (temporarily replaced
by Erica van Loon).
