Collaborating in Fragile Contexts and in Processes of Social Transformation
https://www.zhdk.ch/?furthereducation_aic

International artistic cooperation in fragile contexts and in situations
of conflict has attracted growing attention. The potential of art to
empower so-called marginalized communities, to support processes of social
transformation is internationally recognized. For artists, curators and
organizers, as well as for donor agencies, professional work in this field
requests specific skills. They involve the knowledge of contemporary art
practices, international cooperation and humanitarian work. By combining a
theoretical and an artistic approach to crucial theories and practices,
the modules of the CAS provide the framework for an in-depth involvement.

Participation
The training is designed for

members of internationally cooperating organizations (development
cooperation, diplomatic service, NGOs) working in fragile contexts, who
wish to professionalize their approach to artistic projects;
experienced artists (visual arts, performing arts) and curators who wish
to further develop their understanding of strategies and theories of
international collaboration;
artists, curators, or organizers living in fragile contexts or situations
of social transformation who wish to involve international partners in
their projects (fellowships covering all costs of the CAS can be provided
for participants from fragile contexts).

Objectives
Participants gain a critical understanding of the potential and
limitations of working with art in fragile contexts and processes of
social transformation. They develop a sensitive approach to artistic
collaboration and learn how to evaluate its qualities and social
relevance. Experienced practitioners and researchers present for
discussion artistic strategies and methods for project development,
management and evaluation. Participants develop models of art project
cycle management oriented according to do-no-harm principles and with the
aim of achieving sustainable outcomes.

Modules
The training consists of four modules held either at the Zurich University
of the Arts (ZHdK) or in a region, where exemplary international art
projects can be studied. Participants can choose different combinations
according to their professional backgrounds and needs, with the exception
of module 2, which can only be attended based on preparatory module 1.
Participants who wish to obtain the Certificate of Advanced Studies
conclude with an individual project in the framework of module 4.
