Acțiunea de a ieși din Cubul Alb în spațiul public dă naștere unor situații care, chiar dincolo de ele însele, dezvăluie și funcționarea reală a structurilor de putere. Acest lucru ne învață de asemenea limitele răbdării în actualul mod de gândire public. Ceea ce până acum a fost ascuns este acum vizibil. Deoarece majoritatea intervențiilor de Artă Publică sunt temporare, orice narațiuni sau transmisiuni verbale cu privire la ele sunt, de asemenea, calități esențiale ale operei în sine. Fiecare proiect de artă publică creează o poveste despre mediul social actual. În mod ideal, astfel de povești vor avea o legatură directă cu lucrările, fiind o parte esențială a acestora; în cel mai rău caz – dacă proiectul este blocat la un anumit nivel de birocrație – doar povestea rămâne.

Competența critică a artei este pusă la îndoială acum de populiștii de pretutindeni, în multe dialecte locale. Arta este ultimul refugiu al libertății de exprimare, care trebuie păzit și păstrat mai presus de toate. Soluțiile pentru problemele viitoare pot fi găsite numai dacă urmărim această libertate.

Janos Sugar (1958) a studiat sculptura la Academia Maghiară de Arte din Budapesta. În paralel cu studiile sale, între 1980 și 1986 a fost împlicat îndeaproape în activitatea lui Indigo, un grup de artă interdisciplinară condus de Miklos Erdely. Sugar a participat la expoziții naționale și internaționale de la mijlocul anilor 1980, în 1992 a expus la Documenta IX, Kassel, în 1996 la Manifesta I, Rotterdam. Filmele sale au fost proiectate în 1998 la Arhiva Filmelor Antologice din New York. În 2014 a fost invitat la Bienala de la București, în 2015 a participat la OFF-Biennale, Budapesta. În 1994, 95 de ani și 96 de ani Sugar a organizat seria de conferințe MetaForum (cu Geert Lovink și Diana McCarty. Împreună cu Miklos Peternak a fondat Departamentul Intermedia al Academiei Maghiare de Arte Plastice din Budapesta și a predat teoria artei și a mass-mediei din 1990. (prof. DLA habil). În prezent el locuiește la Budapesta.

Public-Street-Tactical – lecture presentation

The action of stepping out of the White Cube onto the public space, give rise to situations that, quite beyond themselves, also reveal the real workings of power structures. This also teaches us the limits of patience in current public way of thinking. What has hitherto been hidden is now visible. Since most of Public Art interventions are temporary, any narratives or verbal transmissions regarding them are also essential qualities of the work itself. Every Public Art project creates a story about the current social environment. Ideally, such stories will have direct connection to the works, being an essential part of them; in the worst case – if the project is blocked at some level of bureaucracy – only the story remains.
The critical competence of art is questioned now by populists everywhere, in many local dialects. Art is the last refuge of free speech, which must be carefully guarded and preserved above all. Solutions for future problems can be found only if we keep watch over this freedom.

János Sugár (b. 1958) studied sculpting at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. Parallel with his studies, between 1980 and 1986 he was closely involved in the activity of Indigo, an interdisciplinary art group led by Miklós Erdély. Sugár has participated in national and international exhibitions since the mid 1980-ies, in 1992 he exhibited at the documenta IX, Kassel, in 1996 Manifesta I, Rotterdam. His films were screened in 1998 at the Anthology Film Archives in New York. In 2014 he was invited to Bucharest Biennial, in 2015 he participated on the OFF-Biennale, Budapest.
In 1994, 95, and 96 Sugár organized the MetaForum Conference Series (with Geert Lovink and Diana McCarty). Together with Miklós Peternák he founded the Intermedia Department of the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest and he has been teaching art and media theory there since 1990. (prof. DLA habil) He resides in Budapest.
