A Matter of (In)digestions:
online program

It's been a long time since our last newsletter. Last March, you should
have received one, but it was never sent. Back then, we were about to
announce the upcoming opening of our festival, ‘A Matter of
(In)digestions’, then it all changed.
While the consequences and echoes of the events ignated by the Covid-19
outbreak will shape our immediate and mid-term futures, there is a fact
that can help steer us out of turbulent waters: we can radically change the
way in which we live, work, consume and inhabit the world. From the sense
of powerlessness that such events trigger, a sense of possibility could be
distilled, isolated and even cherished. How else to pay respect to the lost
ones, to those who were not able to say goodbye, to most of us drown into
economic uncertainty? Clearly, oblivion is not an option.

So let us venture in an exercise of cinematic montage and go back a few
weeks in time to finally flash forward to what's to come.

Last month, we launched ‘Performance as Text: Neuro-plasticity’ by Céline
Mathieu: the first in a series of online works developed by the artists of
the festival ‘A Matter of (In)digestions’, which will be featured on our
website over the coming weeks and months. Taking the form of a written
piece, ‘Performance as Text’ is a fictional translation of a performance, a
meditation on the plasticity of the mind and its metabolic interaction with
the space inhabited by the body.

Today, we are glad to present the second contribution to our online
program: “I Want to Be Eaten by Celebrities

by Laura Wiedijk & Toon Fibe. Using video as a medium and the Möbius strip as
a form, the duo seduces us into a visceral journey or a glossy twilight
memory with no apparent redemption. Disgust is born and draws its strength
from the fear of being contaminated by a substance, an object, or an idea.
It is a universal emotion that is culturally regulated – snails, for
instance, are a culinary delight for some and a slimy garden pest for
others –, and permeates the social sphere and ‘good-manners’. In the piece
a question is suggested: what could it mean to be assimilated by a
different entity, to disappear into something else? The art of seduction
and of manipulation triggers fear, disgust or arousal, and all together:
intoxication.

*About the Festival*

Focusing on the notion of consumption, ‘A Matter of (In)digestions
<https://lacocinaarchive.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d711beaa7d8601e15cc11c58c&id=bada2bcb89&e=2e0090a94c>’
is conceived as a platform for artists to develop new projects that explore
the polysemy at the very core of the notion of consumption. Together we aim
to highlight some of the socio-political, historical and cultural
intersections that consumption implies. As a result of the recent
confinement, the public program of the festival was postponed to October
2020.

‘A Matter of (In)digestions’ is supported by the Amsterdam Fonds voor de
Kunst, the French Institute in the Netherlands and the Prins Bernhard
Cultuurfonds.
