Subject: How to Inhabit Instability: Showcase of Ukrainian Art Residencies
2.0. Artists in Focus
To: Teh east hub <teh-east-hub at googlegroups.com>
In September 2022, an international Res Artis Conference was planned in
Kyiv as a joint project of IZOLYATSIA. Platform for Cultural Initiatives,
House of Europe, Goethe-Institut in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Institute.
It would have become the first international forum for art residences of
this scale in Ukraine. The working title of the conference was “How to
Inhabit Instability?”. Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine changed
everything.
One of the goals of Zapravka Initiative for Art Residency Support is to
increase the visibility and systematic professional representation of
Ukrainian art residencies internationally. That is why the Zapravka team
and Res Artis are pleased to announce a second showcase of Ukrainian art
residencies for members of the Res Artis network worldwide. This time, the
focus will be on the experiences of both Ukrainian and international
artists participating in Artist-in-Residence (AiR) programs in Ukraine
after the full-scale invasion of Russia to Ukraine. The event's title
symbolically remains unchanged: “How to Inhabit Instability”.
Res Artis are currently facilitating regional meetings to ascertain the
needs, possibilities, and challenges of arts residency hosts in the context
of their specific geographic, social, and economic locations.
On July 01, at 10:00 EEST, five artists will talk about their experience
participating in Ukrainian residencies during a full-scale invasion.
Among speakers:
- Alexandra Bondarev is a young-generation artist working in the fields
of analogue photography, documentary video, textual storytelling, and
poetry. After living in multiple countries and travelling around different
continents for the past decade, she has been spending more time in her
native Vilnius since 2023. Resident at Jam Factory in Lviv, Ukraine
- Rolando Hernández is an artist living between CDMX and Oaxaca City. He
is interested in sound and its social, political and historiographical
relations and incidences. His "Social Sound Sculptures" series tries to
create devices blending institutional critique, sound, performance to
question the limits of the roles of the artists as curator, researcher and
manager. Resident at MC6 in Slavske village, Ukraine
- Paul Maciejowski German artist and curator. He was born in Berlin and
lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine and Düsselorf, Germany. He organized the
residency for German artists in Nahirna 22 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

State Academy of Design and Arts, majoring in Book Graphics. Works with
graphics, illustration, the interaction of graphic and verbal, as well as
ceramics; studies folk art practices, collaborates with Ukrainian clothing
brands, creates comics and zines. Participant of Art-Kuzemyn residency in
Kuzemyn village, Ukraine.
- *Daryna Mamaisur * is an artist and filmmaker from Kyiv. In her
artistic practice, she combines photography, moving images, and theoretical
research. The focus of her works is on landscape transformations in the
context of visual culture, memory, and political ecology. Her last two
films are personal stories about migration, home, and the vulnerability of
language in the context of war. In 2022, she completed the international
Master’s program in documentary filmmaking, DocNomads. Her works have been
exhibited at art exhibitions and have participated in festivals such as
Visions du Réel, FIDMarseille, Kassel Dokfest, DOK Leipzig, and RIDM.
