Best art practices, International award for young curators of contemporary
art.
First edition, theme: projects in non-conventional spaces.
Award and participants admitted:
The Award will assign prizes to the best projects of the last five years
by young curators of
contemporary art. The theme of this edition is: projects in
non-conventional spaces.
The Award accepts only projects that have been completed in the last five
years and
therefore inaugurated after 1st March 2002. Each candidate may compete
with one project
only. Itinerant events or events taking place over a period of time will
be accepted as long
as all the phases are concluded by 1st March 2007.
The Award is open to all curators of all nationalities born on or after
2nd March 1967.
Should the project be the fruit of more than one curator, at least two
thirds of the curators
must respect the age limit.
Multiple presentations will not be accepted. Whosoever presents themselves
as a single
participant cannot then also compete as part of a group and vice versa.

Incompatibility of participants
The following may not participate in the Award:
•Members of the judging commission, their wives/husbands, their
relatives or
whoever carries out business with or for them;
•the employees and administrators of the society offering and
those sponsoring the
award.
Enrolment and requested data
The enrolment will be considered valid on receipt of the documentation of
the project and
of the enrolment form duly completed and signed. The form can be found at
www.bestartpractices.it.
For collective entries each candidate must complete a form.
Each entry must be sent in a sealed envelope and include the following
enclosures:
•enrolment form duly completed in all its parts;
•photocopy of a document of identity of the competitor/s;
•abstract, max 200 words, of the project;
•definition of the project in key words (max 5);
•critical dissertation, max 1000 words, to express objectives of
the project and its
critical prerequisites;
•list of the organisations involved and their roles;
•total of the resources utilised;
•data and documents on paper, digital (CD or DVD) or any other
form considered
valid to document the project. The digital data must be compatible with the
software Windows Word, OpenOffice, Acrobat Reader, Windows MediaPlayer,
RealPlayer, or QuickTime.
The organisers cannot guarantee the readability of any files not supported
by the
above mentioned software or in any other format;
•selection of the most significant publications that have appeared
in the press;
•final critical dissertation of not more than 500 words which
state the results
obtained.
For enclosures no. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, other forms of presentation
will also be accepted
such as video, audio, planning or any other form that the candidate deems
effective as
long as all the requested points are well defined and clearly identifiable.
Should the entry be composed of a group of curators, the enclosures no.1
and 2 must be
presented by all the curators in the same envelope, together with the
other enclosures and
in single copy.

Should any enclosures be missing or not conform to requirements, the entry
will be
excluded from the competition.
Transmission of data
Entries must arrive by 12 midday of Monday 3rd September 2007 by post,
courier or hand
delivery at the Award secretary's office at the following address:

The postmark will not be considered as proof for the date of arrival of
the entry and data
sent by email or other means of transmission different from those
indicated above will not
be accepted.
Languages accepted
The data may be sent in Italian, German, English or Spanish. The press
articles may also
be in languages other than the official languages of the Award.
Participation costs
The participation is free of charge but the delivery expenses will be met
by the participants.
Prizes
First prize € 10,000
Second € 3,000
Third € 2,000
Should any prize be won by a group composed of various competitors the
prize will be
equally divided among them.
Selection and prize giving
The winners will be selected by the assembled Jury.
At the end of the selection the first 8 placed will be classified. It is
within the jury’s
jurisdiction to proclaim, for valid and justified reason, that no project
has reached the
winning standard.
The list of the first 8 selected will be published with effect form 12th
November 2007 on the
website of the Award. No other form of communication is envisaged.
It is also possible that a number of the projects, at the jury’s
discretion, will form part of an
exhibition and in due course a catalogue, and that a number of the
competitors may be
invited to participate in a conference on this subject.
The minutes of the Jury meetings will be available according to the
present laws regarding
rights to access administrative documents.

Composition of the Jury
The international Jury is composed of a Jury President and five
commissioners; each
commissioner expresses one vote according to the criteria of the Award. In
case of parity
of votes, the President’s vote counts double.
President: Carlos Basualdo, curator - Philadelphia Museum of Art;
Commissioner: Marion Piffer Damiani, independent curator;
Commissioner: Letizia Ragaglia, curator - Museion Bolzano;
Jury secretary: Cristina Alietti, Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano;
Jury assistant: Denis Isaia, curator of the Award.
The names of the three remaining members will be made known by
notification on the
Award's website. The organisers reserve the right to select them from a
list of names
given by thirty young curators.
The organisers reserve the right to substitute one or more effective
members with
temporary members of proven authority, without the need to publish these
changes. The
decisions of the Jury are incontestable and are reached by simple
majority, in the
presence of all, or at least four Jury members including the President.
Prize-giving criteria
1. the social impact and results of cultural growth and the acquisition of
a new public
with particular regard to public communication and media awareness. ( 25
points);
2. the result obtained with regard to the aims of the curator's project
and critical
requirements (20 points);
3. the balance between the resources used to realize the project and the
results
obtained (20 points);
4. the degree of innovation of the project (15 points);
5. the quality of the presentation (10 points);
6. the project’s ability to involve various different organizations,
either public and/or
private (10 points);
Ex aequo placing is inadmissible. Should two or more projects obtain ex
aequo status,
these projects will be valued separately when each member of the Jury may
express one
preference only for one of the subjects in question.

Copyright and restitution of projects
The authors of the projects will maintain complete artistic ownership of
their work. The
Society of the Award and the Sponsor Societies reserve the right to
publish the data of the
projects and enclosed documents or to organize an exhibition or anything
else they
consider suitable for the correct promotion of the Award and its
participants, while always
citing the source.
The material received will not be returned to the participants and will
become part of the
Award archives.
Approval of Award regulations
Participation in itself implies full and unconditioned acceptance of the
regulations.
Handling of personal data
The competitors agree that their personal details will be processed in
accordance with the
laws in force in Italy.

Information regarding the protection of personal data (Legislative Decree
no 196/2003) according to the Italian Code.
The Autonomous Province of Bolzano will be holder of the data. All data
supplied will be processed by the Provincial Administration in electronic
form
according to Provincial law no. 10/1992. The Director of the Cultural
Office will be responsible for processing the data.
The conferment of personal data is compulsory for carrying out the
administrative work required. In the event of refusal to supply the
