MA Curating New Media Art at the Liverpool School of Art and Design
Liverpool John Moores University

MA Curating New Media Art is a unique programme delivered by the Liverpool
School of Art and Design in collaboration with FACT (Foundation for Art
& Creative Technology) and supported by Arts Council England North
West. Working with an unparalleled network of partners, students will
enjoy an enhanced experience, which includes FACT as the core course
partner and Tate Liverpool providing an option module. Course resources
also include strong affiliations with events like Futuresonic, the
international urban festival of electronic music and arts as well as
access to conferences and the expertise of an impressive team of lecturers
and curators.

Throughout the year-long MA programme students explore and critically
appraise projects in curating, creating and contextualising New Media
Art. All students are introduced to a range of analytical and theoretical
skills and approaches pertinent to the study of historical and
contemporary material.

The programme offers a postgraduate qualification for students interested
in the study of current and emerging areas of curatorial practice. It
allows students to formulate and test their ideas in a range of arenas
including exhibition, symposium and thesis.

MA Curating New Media Art offers both a practical and theoretical
negotiation of the working methods of new media curatorial practice and
the wider gallery system via projects concerning historical, current and
emerging practice.

Our programme is led by an exceptional international team that includes:

Colin Fallows is Professor of Sound and Visual Arts, Chair of Research,
and Head of Department of Contextual Studies at the Liverpool School of
Art and Design, Liverpool John Moores University. He has explored
crossovers between sound and the visual arts as an artist, researcher,
curator, lecturer and has produced work for live ensemble performance,
recordings, exhibition, installation, radio and the Internet.

Mike Stubbs, recently appointed Director of FACT, (Foundation for Art and
Creative Technology), was formerly Head of Exhibitions at ACMI (the
Australian Centre for Moving Image). His work as Director of Hull Time
Based Arts first won him recognition as a primary promoter of new media
and performance art in an international context.

Dr Julie Sheldon is Reader in Art History at the Liverpool School of Art
and Design, Liverpool John Moores University. Laura Sillars is Senior
Curator (Collaboration Programme) at FACT and was formerly Curator of
Public Programmes at Tate Liverpool. Gina Czarnecki’s artwork intersects
multiple disciplines exploring biology, technology, systems of
classification and identification. Iliyana Nedkova is a curator, producer
and critic of contemporary art and design, and a Researcher in Curatorial
Theory and Practice at the Liverpool School of Art and Design, Liverpool
John Moores University.

Drawing on the expertise of established researchers in Art and Design,
including Associate Researchers and Visiting Lecturers, this MA aims to
identify and explore broad critical debates relating to theory and
practice, to extend awareness and analysis of practices and to examine
critically a range of advanced curatorial methodologies. Core modules
allow students the academic space to develop their own projects. Modules
are organised to provide a framework for students to enhance and
consolidate their intellectual and practical achievements.

As part of the programme, students are encouraged to make links with key
local organisations as appropriate, including FACT (Foundation for Art
and Creative Technology), Liverpool Biennial, Tate Liverpool, Bluecoat
Arts Centre, and National Museums Liverpool.
