[Oberlist] Armenography in Geneva

12th Biennal of Moving Images in Geneva, from October 12 to Deccember  
16 2007. "Armenography" is a documentary project of Anna Barseghian  
and Stefan Kristensen about the territories of the Armenian

According to the theoretician of diasporas Khachig TĂślĂślyan,  
Armenians make up a 'transnation', a term designating a totality  
formed by a country and its diasporan communities within which the  
state constitutes just one of the institutions that fabricate  
identity. 'Diasporas', TĂślĂślyan says, 'are the model communities of  
the transnational moment'. How, concretely, is this 'moment'  
incarnated in the Armenian case.
The exhibition brings together eight video films from fifteen to  
twenty-five minutes in length. They are condensations of the  
interviews we conducted. Six stage the world as it appears when  
viewed from certain highly symbolic places: Aleppo, Kessab, Beirut,  
Anjar, Istanbul and Yerevan. The other two offer a rostrum to leading  
Armenian intellectuals living in the West. These 'Views from the  
West' are intended to spawn others, to be gathered up on voyages to  
Los Angeles, New York, Montreal, Buenos Aires, and places still to be  
discovered. Finally, a space apart has been reserved for the  
projection of a haunted world, Eastern Anatolia, the mythical Old  
Country that Armenians have dreamt of for generations. Since the  
1990s, more and more Armenians from all over the world are setting  
out on voyages to their ancestors' birthplace. What do they hope the  
experience will bring, and what do they actually find?
Armenography means to do more than merely depict the scattered  
existence of a nation. It seeks to contribute to a quest of the sort  
that is crucially necessary if we are to find models for the  
development of an identity and a culture capable of reconciling three  
imperatives: active reworking of the past, rather than a rehashing of  
well-worn clichĂŠs; the development of collective structures, without  
which cultural production cannot be sustained; and the primacy of  
individual research over group values. Such are the conditions that  
must be met if a transnation is to become the germ of a resolutely  
contemporary culture.

Armenography is a coproduction of Utopiana and the Center for  
contemporary Image Saint Gervais Genève, and was supported by the  
State and the City of Geneva, by Le Quartier Center for Contemporary  
Art of Quimper and the Thessaloniki Biennale.
