Zurich Summer School 2009

Art/Photography/Media
Submission deadline: 31 March 2009

Institute for Art History
University of Zurich, Switzerland
2-4 June 2009

The Institute for Art History introduces two new programs for the fall
of 2009: a specialized M.A. program „History of Art and Photography with
Technical Studies" and a doctoral program „Media History of the Arts".
Both programs will explore especially the aesthetic, epistemologic and
political meaning of techniques, materials and media in relationship to
the history of the arts. The M.A. and the Ph.D. programs will start in
September 2009.
In addition, interested students and doctoral candidates may choose to
participate in the „Art/Photography/Media" summer school to gain insight
into both programs, to attend presentations by representatives of
national and international partner institutions and to visit research
institutions and museums in and around Zurich. The summer school is
organized and funded by a joint initiative of the Institute of Art
History and the Centre for Studies in the Theory and History of
Photography, funded by the Dr. Carlo Fleischmann foundation. The
directors of the summer school are Bettina Gockel, Wolfgang Kersten,
Hans Thomsen and Philip Ursprung.
Students should submit a cv and a short statement of interest (200 to
300 words). Doctoral candidates should submit a cv and a proposal (200
to 300 word abstract) for a presentation of their research projects.
Presentations should not exceed 30 minutes. We encourage applications
from candidates outside the field of art history.
Topics to be explored include:

Epistemology of the fine arts, its materials and media
Pictorial and media history of the natural sciences
The history of restoration
Aesthetics of techniques and materials
Art and Media
Documentary photography
Art and photography
Photography's Materials

Proposals from international candidates are welcome, and within reason,
support with travel costs and accommodation will be offered to the
successful applicants. – Applicants will be informed about the outcome
of their submission before the end of April.
