Deadline: 07 June 2009

The Economics Education and Research Consortium (EERC) and CERGE-EI,
the regional partners of the Global Development Network in the CEE and
CIS countries, are pleased to announce an inter-regional Research Grant
Competition on the theme: 'Cities - An Analysis of the Post-Communist
Experience'.

We are especially looking for research that:
* Has a clear research question which is academically relevant and adds
to the existing academic knowledge on the topic of investigation
* Is policy relevant and leads to policy lessons that are of interest to
an international audience

Note: We encourage proposals for policy relevant
interdisciplinary research on the intersection of Economics with other
disciplines, such as Political Science, Sociology, Demography,
Geography and Ecology. We also encourage proposals that are based on
comparative research spanning the CEE and CIS or research teams combing
CIS and CEE researchers.

Award:

The best research teams will be invited to present their projects at
either the EERC Research Workshop on June 27-29, 2009 in Kiev or the
CERGE-EI workshop in Prague on August 9-10, 2009. Representatives of
projects must attend the workshop in order to be considered for a grant.

Grants up to $18,000 will be awarded to individual researchers or small
research teams (up to 3 persons) for up to 12 months beginning in
January 2010 (with the possibility of a 6 month no cost extension).
Grant size will depend on the specific budget requirements of the
project. We plan to select approximately 8 research proposals.

To apply:

Proposals must include the following seven components:

1. A cover sheet clearly specifying the project title, names of
principal researchers, mailing address and e-mail contact addresses
(very important, as e-mail will be used for follow-up requests and
questions).

2. An abstract of no more than 200 words outlining thesignificance of the
research and the methodology to be used.

3. A research proposal of no more than 10 doubled-spaced pages showing
sufficient familiarity with the topic and methodology to provide
confidence in the project's successful completion.

4. A bibliography of relevant literature.

5. CVs of all principal researchers.

6. A budget in USD showing expenses in all categories. While the
categories will vary from grant to grant, they should, where
applicable, include as a minimum: Salaries and other compensation for
the grantee(s) (including payroll taxes and fringe benefits); Salaries
and other compensation for research assistants and clerical personnel
(including payroll taxes and fringe benefits); English Editing Fees;
Grant-related travel (for research purposes - no conference travel will
be granted); Equipment and/or data/software Purchases; Materials,
supplies, telecommunications charges; Institutional Overhead (limited
to a MAXIMUM of 10%).

7. If relevant, a confirmation signed by a responsible officer of the
sponsoring institution agreeing to administer the grant if awarded.

All applications must be submitted in English.

A complete set of all materials specified to be included in the
proposal must be sent as a single .pdf file to both EERC and CERGE-EI
to the following addresses: cities la eerc.kiev.ua and
research.competition la cerge-ei.cz. Please mention 'cities proposal' in the
subject line.
