BLOODY APRIL 2009 EVENTS WERE A TURNING POINT FOR MOLDOVAN MASS MEDIA
Infotag, Moldovan news agency
Jan. 28, 2010

The on-line press is developing in Moldova with an astonishing success,
which is a consequence of the important role the press played in the
post-election events of April 2009, presumes the Independent Journalism
Center (CIJ).

In its Report on the mass media
developments in Moldova in 2009, the Center offered an opinion that the
crucial factor for the on-line outlets' successful development was that they
used the definition of 'twitter revolution' and became the only source of
operative information for Moldova and Europe and the rest of the world.

The Report authors highlighted also the numerous violations of journalists'
rights in connection with the April events. Thus, over 60 journalists fell
victim of intimidation, threats and discriminative treatment in 2009, and 33
foreign journalists were detained, interrogated and expelled from the
republic.

Political changes in Moldova and the formation of a Right-wing governing
majority led to important reforms in the mass media sector, generating a
healthy competition and a favorable climate on the media market.

Thus, two essential projects were launched - Jurnal Trust Media and Romanian
group's Realitatea Catavencu. The Romanian investor will open a television
channel in Moldova - TV Publika, and will be administering Publika websites
and portals Unimedia, LadyClub, and Vesti.md.

The CIJ presumes that in 2009 the republic's national television and radio
opened a new page in their history, creating a genuinely impartial and
truthful service. However, local experts are expecting 2010 to be a hard
year for the Moldovan mass media market due to grown competition.

The Report was prepared and issued in three languages (Romanian, English and
Russian) with the financial assistance provided by the Civil Rights
Defenders (Sweden).
