The Interdisciplinary art group SERDE is public association in Latvia. And
it is a platform for international and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Our aim is to encourage professionals’ creative development and long-term
cooperation through participation in residencies programs.
Since 2002 SERDE has developed the public workshop centre in Aizpute, a
small town in Kurzeme region of Latvia. SERDE is located in old wooden
historical buildings with technical equipment for experimental and
innovative projects, and offers residencies for local and international
artists, culture workers, activists, managers and scientists.

Art laboratory AIZ – artists residency is an artists-run,
non-profit-making initiative unique in the Latvia that provides a creative
arena for artists who are ambitious for their work and open to the
challenges of an environment that demands experiment, co-operation and
exchange. Artists can work in a variety of disciplines and media:
installation, land art, performance, video, painting and sculpture,
ceramics, time-based, photographic, ect.

AIZ (aiz in the Latvian means; behind, beyond, over, across) removes
artists geographically and conceptually from their usual studio practice
and brings them together to work in a way that is mutually beneficial,
contributing to a developing international dialogue that explores our
cultural and parochial differences whilst celebrating our commonality.

AIZ:

•	Providing a focused period of time in which to make work
•	Being about process and not end product
•	Allowing artists to take risks and re-evaluate their practice
•	Challenging and changing perceptions
•	Encouraging collaboration and co-operation
•	Generating international dialogue and contacts
•	Providing new opportunities

LOCATION

AIZ takes place in Aizpute a small town on the west part of Latvia (180km
from the capital Riga, 50 km from one of the biggest cities – Liepaja).
There are a little bit more than 5000 inhabitants currently living there
and the town is known for its cultural and historical heritage as well as
for its quiet and relaxing atmosphere.

STRUCTURE

Artists are resident for the duration of the 14- day workshop. We are
planning to have 10 artists in the workshop. A series of visitors are
invited to attend throughout the workshop to encourage critical debate and
dialogue. This will include presentations, lectures.

Whilst the emphasis is placed firmly upon work in progress, the final
Saturday (13th of August) will be open to the public and fellow artists to
visit the workshop and view the work.

All meals, accommodation and space are provided along with technical
support and facilities.

FUNDING

AIZ has received funding from the State Culture Capital Fund of Latvia,
Aizpute municipality and other private individuals and organizations.
Residency provides housing, meals, studio and materials. We hope to offer
all the selected artists fully funded places excluding their travel to and
from the workshop and small residency fee (100 EUR). Workshop Artists,
especially those from outside the Latvia, are encouraged to seek financial
help through national or regional funding organizations, charitable
trusts, etc. We will provide all necessary recommendations, papers and any
other possible help, when you will be selected.
