Despre primaveri arabe si ierni ale visarii; Roza El-Hassan dezbate cu  
Galit Eilat

Nutu Ion nr. 2, Bucuresti

“As spune ca, fara îndoiala, nu suntem în pozitia sa cream un  
sistem de justitie ideala, asa cum nu suntem în pozitia sa cream o  
societate ideala în mintea noastra. Nu stim destul si suntem prea  
limitati si prea partinitori si tot felul de alte lucruri. Dar suntem  
într-o pozitie – si trebuie sa actionam în calitate de fiinte umane  
sensibile si responsabile, în acea pozitie, pentru a ne imagina si a  
merge mai departe în crearea unei societati mai bune si a unui sistem  
de justitie mai bun.” (Noam Chomsky, în Natura umana: Dreptate

A treia întalnire din seria „Chomsky-Foucault Debate” nu încearca  
sa fie o oglinda a fluxului de stiri, desi este determinata de aceeasi  
urgenta. Urmarim cu totii în timp real evenimentele din Orientul  
Apropiat si Mijlociu si proiectam asupra lor sperante si dorinte,  
unele pe care nici nu stiam ca le avem. Aici în România, ne declaram  
trecuti prin asta si privim atotstiitori cum fragilele lor împliniri  
revolutionare sunt amenintate zilnic; si totusi, noi am putea fi cei  
care ne înselam si a lor sa fie lupta „în scopul dreptatii, (...)  
în scopul realizarii nevoilor umane fundamentale, nu doar în scopul  
înlocuirii grupului de la putere cu un altul”, cum ar spune Chomsky.
Am invitat sa vorbeasca despre aceste lucruri o artista si o curatoare  
ale caror practici sunt inserate într-o constiinta politica si care  
sunt atente la formele estetice în care se manifesta revendicarile sau  
declaratiile sociale si politice. Nu vom specula asupra radacinilor,  
însiruirii de evenimente sau asupra contextului istoric al lungii  
primaveri arabe, dar vom cadea de acord ca visurile acesteia sunt  
împartasite de multi dintre noi. În acest spatiu în care imaginatia  
este eliberata, artistii si lucratorii culturali ar trebui sa fie  
între primii care sa intre si sa se exprime.
Dezbaterea va fi precedata de scurte prezentari ale activitatii lor  
profesionale de catre Roza El-Hassan si Galit Eilat.

Róza El-Hassan (n. 1966) este artista, de origine maghiara si siriana,  
stabilita la Budapesta. Practica ei artistica, manifestata în diverse  
medii (precum sculptura, desenul, performance-art, design-ul  
colaborativ, interventiile în spatiul public) atinge problematici  
legate de responsabilitatea individuala sau apartenenta la comunitate,  
generozitate, identitati hibride sau straine, si altele. Unul dintre  
proiectele sale recente, „No Corruption” (genti de laptop din  
nuiele – geamantan din nuiele – genti pentru aparatul de  
fotografiat din nuiele – un proiect de design contemporan bazat pe o  
veche traditie de manufactura romani) este rezultatul colaborarii cu o  
comunitate de romi din Budapesta. A participat în numeroase expozitii  
si proiecte, inclusiv în Bienala Periferic de la Iasi în 2008.

Galit Eilat (n. 1965) este curatoare si critic de arta, nascuta în  
Israel. Este director fondator al Centrului Israelian pentru Arta  
Digitala din Holon si curator cercetator la Van Abbemuseum din  
Eindhoven. Interesele ei de cercetare se axeaza pe problemele  
activismului social si politic în cadrul artelor, precum si pe  
politica actuala din Orientul Mijlociu. A curatoriat si co-curatoriat  
expozitii si proiecte majore, între care Politics of Collection,  
Collection of Politics (Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 2010), The Real  
War, solo show cu Sean Snyder, (The Israeli Center for Digital Art,  
Holon, 2010), Liminal Spaces traveling seminars (Israel si Palestina,  
2006–2008).
is an Israeli-born art critic and curator. În colaborare cu Sebastian  
Cichocki de la Muzeul de Arta Moderna din Varsovia, recent a  
curatoriat expozitia lui Yael Bartana “… and Europe will be stunned  
[...si Europa va fi uimita]”, realizata în Pavilionul Poloniei în  
cadrul celei de-a 54-a Bienala de la Venetia, 2011.

The Chomsky-Foucault Debate este o serie de întalniri live initiata de  
Caminul Cultural si coordonata de Manuel Pelmus si Raluca Voinea.
Caminul Cultural este un proiect nomad ce ofera un cadru performativ  
si discursiv pentru practica artistica si politica. Directia artistica  
a proiectului este asigurata de artistii Brynjar Bandlien, Farid  
Fairuz si Manuel Pelmus. Proiectul este administrat de Asociatia  
culturala Solitude Project în cooperare cu Bandlien/Pelmus.

subRahova este un spatiu destinat artelor contemporane fiind un  
proiect coordonat artistic de Farid Fairuz si Eduard Gabia si  
administrat de Asociatia culturala Solitude Project.
subRahova este situat în vecinatatea cartierului Rahova, pe strada  
Sergent Nutu Ion nr. 2/Str. Mihail Sebastian 112 (a treia intersectie  
de la Hotel Marriot spre cartierul Rahova, la intersectia strazii  
Mihail Sebastian cu Calea 13 septembrie), in curtea RECOM.

On Arab springs and winters of dreaming; Róza El-Hassan debates with  
Galit Eilat


Wednesday, 30 November 2011, 7 pm, at subRahova, strada Sergent Nuțu  
Ion nr. 2, Bucureşti

“I would agree that we are certainly in no position to create a  
system of ideal justice, just as we are in no position to create an  
ideal society in our minds. We don't know enough and we're too limited  
and too biased and all sorts of other things. But we are in a position- 
and we must act as sensitive and responsible human beings in that  
position to imagine and move towards the creation of a better society  
and also a better system of justice.” (Noam Chomsky, in Human Nature:  
Justice versus Power; Noam Chomsky debates with Michel Foucault, 1971).


The third in the “Chomsky-Foucault debate” series is not trying to  
be a mirror of the news flow, though it is born out of the same  
urgency. We are all watching in real time the events from the Near and  
Middle East and we are projecting on them hopes and desires, some of  
which we never knew we had. Here in Romania, we declare ourselves  
smart and watch presciently how their fragile revolutionary  
achievements are threatened every day, still we might be wrong and  
theirs could be the fight “in the ends of justice, (…) in the ends  
of realising fundamental human needs, not merely in the ends of  
putting some other group into power”, as Chomsky would say.

We have invited to talk about these issues an artist and a curator  
whose practices are embedded in political consciousness and who are  
attentive to the aesthetic forms in which the social and political  
demands or statements are manifested. We will not speculate on the  
roots, the sequence of events or the historical context of the long  
Arab spring but we will agree that its dreams are shared by many of  
us. In this space where imagination is freed, artists and cultural  
workers should be among the first ones to step in and speak out.

The debate will be preceded by short presentations of their  
professional work by Róza El-Hassan and Galit Eilat.

Róza El-Hassan (b. 1966) is an artist, of Hungarian and Syrian origin,  
living in Budapest. Manifested in various media (such as sculpture,  
drawing, performance, collaborative design, public art interventions),  
her practice touches upon issues of individual responsibility or  
community belonging, generosity, hybrid or alien identities, and  
others. One of her recent projects, “No Corruption” (wicker laptop  
bags – wicker suitcase – wicker camera bags - ancient Romani  
handcraft and contemporary design project) is the result of a  
collaboration with a Roma community from Hungary. She participated in  
numerous exhibitions and projects, including the Periferic Biennale in  
Iasi, 2008.


Galit Eilat (b. 1965) is an Israeli-born art critic and curator. She  
is a founding director of the Israeli Center for Digital Art in Holon  
and a research curator at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. Her  
research interests focus on problems of social and political activism  
within the field of arts, as well as current politics in the Middle  
East. She curated and co-curated major art exhibitions and projects,  
among which Politics of Collection, Collection of Politics (Van  
Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 2010), The Real War, solo show with Sean  
Snyder, (The Israeli Center for Digital Art, Holon, 2010), Liminal  
Spaces  traveling  seminars (Israel and Palestine, 2006–2008). In  
collaboration with Sebastian Cichocki from the Museum of Modern Art in  
Warsaw, she recently curated Yael Bartana’s exhibition “… and  
Europe will be stunned” held at the Polish Pavilion at the 54th  
Venice Biennale in 2011.



The Chomsky-Foucault Debate is a series of live encounters initiated  
by Căminul Cultural and coordinated by Manuel Pelmuş and Raluca  
Voinea.

Căminul Cultural is a nomadic project offering a performative and  
discursive frame for the artistic and political practices. The  
project’s artistic direction is provided by the artists Brynjar  
Bandlien, Farid Fairuz and Manuel Pelmuș. The project is administered  
by the cultural association Solitude Project in cooperation with  
Bandlien/Pelmuș.

Main partner: Erste Stiftung. Partners: subRahova, Critic Atac, veioza  
arte, Rokolectiv.


subRahova is a space dedicated to contemporary arts, a project  
coordinated by Farid Fairuz and Eduard Gabia and administered by the  
cultural association Solitude Project.

subRahova can be found in the vicinity of Rahova neighbourhood, on  
Sergent Nuțu Ion str., no. 2 (the third crossroad from Marriot Hotel  
towards Rahova neighbourhood, at the crossroad of Mihail Sebastian  
str. with 13 septembrie Avenue), in the courtyard of RECOM.
