Programme

This workshop is intended to provoke thinking beyond mainstream
heritage concepts, categories and texts while engaging with
alternative intellectual and methodological frame-works orientated
towards the fundamental re-conceptualisations and reconstruction of
core heritage values, practices and ethics.

The impetus for this workshop is multiyear interdisciplinary project
Man is Space( Vitić_dances, Another Architecture, etc.), that is
aspired towards discovering and promotion of new models of
interconnection between cultural practice and civic activism, and
transparency of cultural and social housing policy. Man is Space aims
to stimulate the discussion about the modes and possibilities of
conservation and rehabilitation of modern Croatian architecture and
its transformation into active cultural, touristic and economic
capital. This project focuses metaphorically and literally on a Man as
a spatial creature, creative creature that conquers and occupies the
space, and is conceived to be developed through long-term research of
all forms of creation, modelling, re-thinking and devastation of space
as one of the basic human resources, i.e. community resource.

Finally, "Man is Space: Vitić Dances” is a community art project on
a 10-storey condominium building in Zagreb built by the architect Ivo
Vitić – a masterpiece of the modern architecture of the late
1950’s, registered as a national monument - that is in a
deteriorating state, and threatens the lives of its 256 inhabitants.
This project of reordering spatial and social relations, began by
Croatian artist Boris Bakal (Shadow Casters) in 2005 by moving into
the building and becoming deeply acquainted with its history, its
tenants and their everyday hardship; starting a complex
interdisciplinary endeavour that combines permanent artistic
interventions and programmes in and around the building, with
consistent social engagement, while aiming to raise the public
awareness of its tenants and local community, and to restore this
iconic building along with regeneration of material and non-material
aspects of urban life enhanced by civic interactions and
participation. Restoration of this building (planned for 2015) will be
the one of the major investments (funded by co-owners and City of
Zagreb) in social housing ever in Croatia.
