Résidences d’artistes à Utopiana – appel à projets pour 2016-17

Utopiana met au concours une résidence d’artiste autour de la thématique suivante :

BioTopes / BioChores

L’instabilité créée par les activités débordantes des hommes exige l’émergence d’une « conscience biosphérique ». « L’absence de futur a déjà commencé » et « la fin du monde » se pose comme une forme de fabulation mythique, dans l’imaginaire contemporain. Comment apprendre à être touchés par cette situation ? Comment réinventer notre lien avec la terre/Terre ?

Quand Deleuze et Guattari écrivent dans Mille Plateaux que « le territoire serait l’effet de l’art » et « l’artiste le premier homme qui dresse une borne ou fait une marque », ils visent ce lien fondamental des hommes avec la terre et leur effort inlassable de s’y repérer et de le rendre habitable. Autrement dit, l’action des créateurs s’apparente à ce qui produit des changements dans des biotopes et qui les fait tendre vers de nouveaux équilibres.

Ce geste de réinvention reviendrait à inclure les humains dans les biotopes écologiques. Les descriptions de biotopes omettent de mentionner l’homme parmi les vivants, tels les champignons, les bactéries, les végétaux, les animaux, qui peuplent les écosystèmes, lesquels conservent leurs propriétés grâce à ces communautés diverses qui entretiennent une multitude de relations et d’échanges.

Or, pour intégrer les humains dans les biotopes, il faudrait penser selon l’image d’un bio-chore. En effet, le topos grec renvoie à une compréhension statique et délimitée de l’espace, tandis que la chora représente elle le lieu du devenir de l’être humain, sa matrice et son empreinte. Cette compréhension relationnelle de l’espace fait de la chora le lieu du « croître-ensemble des choses dans la concrétude du monde sensible. » (A. Berque). En devenant biochore, le biotope s’ouvre à la question du sens et des possibles, au travail créatif où se forge le commun de toutes les formes de vie, la forme humaine en interaction avec toutes les autres.

Comment travailler à un imaginaire qui inclut les hommes comme agents participant au même titre que les autres vivants à la production et aux soins d’un écosystème ? Comment un BioTope / BioChore peut-il accueillir d’autres communautés dans ses processus ?

Les candidats intéressés feront parvenir par courrier électronique à l’adresse un dossier complet comprenant :

une lettre de motivation comprenant notamment les disponibilités pour une résidence entre mars 2016 et décembre 2017 (max. 3 mois)
un projet incluant des activités participatives telles que workshops, conférences,etc…
un portfolio (photos, vidéos, audios…)
un CV.

Conditions de résidence:

Chaque candidature est étudiée par le Comité d’Utopiana. Utopiana offre un logement et une participation d’environ CHF 1’000.- par mois tout compris. Cependant et si cela est possible, nous encourageons chaque artiste à effectuer des recherches complémentaires de financement. Une fois le dossier accepté, un travail collaboratif est mis en place afin de réaliser au mieux le projet choisi. Les artistes en résidence peuvent compter sur un appui administratif de la part d’Utopiana.

Artist's residencies at Utopiana – call for projects 2016-2017

Utopiana is calling for projects for artistic residencies on the following topic

BioTopes/BioChores

The activities of mankind have generated an instability on earth that calls for the emergence of a “biospheric consciousness”. “The absence of future is already here” and “the end of the world” have established themselves as a form of mythical fabulation in the contemporary imagination. How can we learn to be affected by this situation? How can we reinvent our relationship with the earthly/Earth?

When in A Thousand Plateaus Deuleuze and Guattari make territory the result of art and position the artist as “the first person to set out a boundary stone, or to make a mark”, they point towards the essential link that humankind maintains with the earth, revealing the human’s endless effort to position itself within it and to make it habitable. In other words, the creative act is linked to what instigates and produces changes within the biotopes and what makes the movement towards new equilibriums possible.

Underlying this gesture of reinvention is the inclusion of human beings into ecological biotopes. Indeed, descriptions of biotopes omit to mention the human amongst the other living organisms such as mushrooms, bacteria, vegetation, animals. Ecosystemic properties are preserved thanks to the diversity amongst these living organisms and they maintains and encourage multitudes of relations and exchanges.

However, in order to integrate humans into the biotopes, we must think alongside the image of a bio-chore. While the Greek topos sends us back to a static and constrained understanding of space, the chora represents a place of human becoming, its matrix and its traces. This relational understanding of space makes the chora a place of “growing togetherness of things within the concreteness of the sensible world.” (A. Berque). Thus, in becoming biochore, the biotope opens itself up to the question of meaning and of possibilities, to the creative work where the foundations of all life forms are forged, including human life interacting with all other forms.

How can we challenge and rethink the imaginary so as to include mankind as an active agent participating in equal measure with other life forms in the production of and care for an ecosystem? How can a BioTope/BioChore welcome and integrate other communities into its processes?

The prospective candidates must send their application s via email to the address residence at utopiana.ch. Applications must include:

a letter of motivation mentioning the artist’s availabilities between March 2016 and December 2017 (max. 3 months)
a description of the project including participative activities such as workshop, conferences, etc.
a portfolio (photographs, video, and sound files, etc.)
a CV
Deadline for applications : January 30 2016

Conditions of residency:

Each application will be carefully reviewed by the selection committee at Utopiana. Utopiana offers housing and a participation of about SFR 1’000.- each month all included.

Nonetheless and if possible, we encourage each artist to apply for complementary funding.

Once the application is accepted, and in order to create the optimal working conditions for the project, a collaborative exchange will begin between the artist and Utopiana. Artists in residence can count on administrative support from Utopiana.
