Act of Faith - Call for entries

Act of Faith
In one guise or another, religion currently pervades discussion. In a fire
fanned by fear of Islam, resorting to religion has become acceptable in
the West too. Faith is back with a vengeance - as a source of certainty
and stability, a safe haven, a refuge with its own norms and values,
closely connected with the idea of a closed society that is based on
tradition and brotherhood.
But what happens when this faith comes in contact with the surrounding
world, an open society that is continually changing, based as it is on
dialogue among various opinions? Ultimately the separation of church and
state is one of the basic principles of Western society, and a globalized
world, with its free exchange of goods and ideas, is a source of heresy.
God and Allah, the Vatican and Washington, holy scripture and law books,
global and local, love and resentment: The Noorderlicht Photofestival 2007
investigates what happens when faith meets the world around it, where the
collisions of different value systems lead to friction.
Act of Faith is an international group exhibition that will be accompanied
by a special catalogue. Act of Faith is the main exhibition of the
festival.
We are looking for photoseries, either finished or 'in progress'.
Noorderlicht rarely has the opportunity to show or work with single
images.
The work should be accompanied by a short and clear description of the
project plus a c.v. and complete contact details of the
photographer/artist.
We especially welcome recent projects, for instance a series you just
finished. We emphasize that you can also submit projects that are still in
progress. Older or even historical series are not excluded, but there are
fewer opportunities for Noorderlicht to show such work.
The direct sending of a specific series is better than just e-mailing us a
website address where the series is to be found.
PHOTOFESTIVAL 2008 ON EASTERN EUROPE
Friesland, September-October 2008
Behind Walls - Eastern Europe before November 1989
The fall of the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall changed the world. But
for some, the curtains remain closed and the walls still stand. In the old
East Bloc countries there were a number of talented photographers active
during the Communist era, whose work could not reach the audience it
deserved because of censorship and the Cold War.
Even after the changes, their work remained unseen. Where the present
generation of photographers travel freely and use the internet to bring
their work to a world-wide audience, for this older generation it was too
late; too many walls stood in the way.
The Noorderlicht Photofestival 2008 goes in search of these hidden gems of
times long gone.
This 15th Noorderlicht festival is the fifth and last of the series with a
non-Western region-theme, that is being held in Leeuwarden since 2000.
Starting 2010 the event will take a new approach for bringing non-Western
photography to the attention of the West.
Submissions are welcome.
