Project Description

Mostar is a beautiful city which since the war has remained divided in two
different parts based on ethnic and religious affiliation of the people.
During the war from 1992 to 1995 the bridge – the town´s landmark – was
destroyed. On the 23rd of July 2004, UNESCO organized the re-opening of
the restored Old Bridge (Stari Most). The bridge connects the eastern
Muslim and Bosniak part of the town with the Catholic and Croat western
part in an architectural way. The daily life of the two ethnic groups,
however, is going on in different areas. Exchange between them takes place
very rarely.

The ensemble of the bridge and the houses of the old-town are
extraordinarily beautiful. Under the bridge a little river comes down and
flows into the Neretva. In the very near surroundings there is also a
little amphitheatre. It is hard to find something comparable to this
ambience on the Balkans.

To organize intercultural exchange and joint action in Mostar is a
difficult matter. In most of the cases the efforts reach just one side of
the two denominations. To shake up the wall of prejudices is the most
urgent question at hand – and what is more, by which means. Children and
adolescents are thought to be the most open-minded and less prejudiced
groups of society. Therefore an event prepared for this target group could
be a great beginning. Children and, of course, their parents could be
caught by a fascinating, colourful and exciting performance that consists
of e.g. clownery and magic, acrobatics, mime and juggling. The setting
around the Old Bridge looks like it was made for a medieval circus and
magical programme. The event is going to be another attraction of the
region within the summer festival in Mostar.

Circus as a topic does not mean a simple spate of performances. Light,
video and sound installation, theatre and a colourful art spectacle belong
to such an event, as well as fire-eaters and bridge jumpers. Stages for
the different kinds of performances will be the terraces or roof areas
around the river valley.

The project “Kultur auf dem Drahtseil” is a joint initiative of the German
and French embassies, the Centre Malraux, the Goethe-Institut and
tanzelarija, organisation for the promotion of contemporary dance in
Bosnia and Herzegovina. It sees itself as the kick-off event for a
festival which is to connect the eastern and western parts of Mostar,
becoming an annual tradition in the city.
