Performing the East
April 23 –July 5, 2009
Salzburger Kunstverein
http://www.salzburger-kunstverein.at

Opening:  Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, April 28, 2009, 7 p.m.
Kontakt. The Art Collection of Erste Bank Group
Lecture with Dr. Walter Seidl, Curator

During the exhibition there will bee weekly performances and lectures,
every Tuesday 7 p.m.

Many performative works of the 1970s from former East Bloc countries were
borne by political protest in which gender relations, the artist’s
position within communist society, or the critique of the prevailing
circumstances came up. Twenty years after the collapse of this political
system, a selection of these
performative, artistic scenes are presented in “Performing the East”.
The exhibition works with a comparison of historical and contemporary
projects from these countries.
The question of a pay out on the promises and hopes of a freer society is
addressed. Through the establishment of “turbo capitalism” a new,
difficult starting point arose for the young generation of artists,
presenting new challenges for the art scenes of these countries.
Throughout the duration of the exhibition there will be a weekly rotation
of performances by young artists and lectures from theorists and business
people.
Artists, who, for a wide variety of reasons, either had a historically
definitive influence or could only work for a short period of time, are
also incorporated in a timeline and the most important political events
are
mentioned.
