Center for Curatorial Studies
The graduate program at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College
provides practical training and experience in a museum setting and an
intensive course of study in the history of the contemporary visual
Its faculty includes curators and other museum professionals, scholars in
the humanities and social sciences, artists, and critics. Most faculty
members are working professionals or hold permanent academic appointments
at institutions other than Bard.
The curriculum is specifically designed to deepen students' understanding
of the intellectual and practical tasks of curating exhibitions of
contemporary art, particularly in the complex social and cultural
situations of present-day urban arts institutions, and to help students
improve their interpretive and critical writing.
Up to twenty students are admitted to the graduate program each year.
Applicants for admission must hold a B.A., B.S., or B.F.A degree from an
accredited college or university in the United States or a baccalaureate
or equivalent degree from a college or university outside the United
States. An applicant's undergraduate major need not be in art history or
the studio arts; however, applicants must demonstrate that they have a
broad knowledge of the history of art as well as acquaintance with the
contemporary visual arts.
